Thanks to renewed interest in Queen following Freddie's death, Parlophone and Hollywood Records went into career retrospective overdrive. While it seemed that every band of the "old guard" was releasing comprehensive 4- or 5-disc box sets, Queen Productions decided to eschew that altogether and instead issued competing compilations and rarities sets. Box Of Trix falls into the latter category, and indeed contains an odd pairing: the disc contains The 12" Collection, which wrapped up (for the most part) Queen's extended remixes, bookended needlessly by Bohemian Rhapsody and The Show Must Go On, singles which either were released before extended remixes became fashionable (the former) or at a time when the band simply lost interest in the format (the latter). The video was a heavily edited VHS of Queen's performance at the Rainbow Theatre in November 1974, professionally shot by Bruce Gowers at a time when the band were considering releasing a live album and film. That this never materialized at the time is of little consequence; the video was made available in excellent quality, and shows a period of the band's history when the only true hits they had were Seven Seas Of Rhye and Killer Queen, itself only a couple of weeks old. The rest of the set is peppered with favorite and obscure album tracks alike, and displays a band who were more intent on creating drama with their music and light shows than grandstanding for packed arenas and stadia. (Additionally, the box contains a pin, a patch, a T-shirt, an accompanying book of information, and a nearly all-encompassing poster of Queen's single and album sleeves throughout the world.) Much like other Queen box sets, Box Of Trix has faded into obscurity, and is now out of print and fetches high prices on Internet trading websites. Hopes are that the material will be expanded and restored at some point in the not-too-distant future, but it's impossible to gaze into the marketing crystal ball of Queen Productions and know for certain exactly what releases lie ahead.
