Queen had always danced a fine line with their videos, often preferring straightforward performance shoots in lieu of grandiose productions that incorporated stories and multiple costume changes. However, the dawn of video was still in its prime, and wouldn't be accepted until MTV skyrocketed in popularity in the mid 1980s. So, Queen's early videos are archaic and anachronistic by today's standards – or even standards 10 years from when they first "pioneered" the music video with Bohemian Rhapsody – but that didn't stop them from issuing them multiple times over the years on various compilations. Greatest Video Hits 1 is the first official collection of Queen's videos from 1973 until 1980 to be released on DVD. Loosely following the tracklist of the 1981 Greatest Hits compilation, it's a valiant effort from a band who didn't really find their way in front of the lens until the various videos for The Works. Still, it's refreshing to see Queen updated for the new millennium, with digital transfers and a 5.1 mix that would make even the most devoted videophile gape in wonder. Unfortunately, the decision was made to transfer the videos from the original 4:3 ratio to 16:9 widescreen, meaning that the top and bottom of each video was cropped. Quite why this decision was made is anyone's guess, and it was sacrilege enough to cause anger among rabid Queen videophiles. (more to come) Chapters
