Much like Greatest Hits I & II from earlier in the 1990s, the three "greatest hits" discs were bundled into an all-encompassing multi-disc set for the important and lucrative Christmas market. As with the earlier (and slimmer) compilation, nothing new was offered, begging the question: what's the point? Fans agreed, and the album only reached #63 in the UK upon its first run in November 2000. It was rereleased in May 2002, shortly after the London premiere of We Will Rock You: The Musical, and narrowly missed the top spot, peaking at #2. It even charted in the US, reaching #48; considering that Made In Heaven reached only #58 in North America, this was a success. It was revealed in 2005 that Queen Productions had intended on promoting the album on a German shopping channel. A more elaborate package, containing not only the three greatest hits discs but also a VHS version of Greatest Video Hits 2 and a We Will Rock You: The Musical T-shirt, was produced for this plan, but Roger protested the idea, apparently exclaiming, "We don't sell things on shopping channels!" As a result, this interesting package remained in a warehouse for years until Brian came up with the idea of giving them away at the September 2005 Fan Club Convention, with the caveat that none of them be sold on eBay. Though, of course, human nature being what it is, some of them did. TracklistsCredits
