It'd be easy to criticize Stone Cold Classics for being a crass cash-in on Brian and Roger's appearance on US television phenomenon American Idol... and that's exactly what it is. There was no need to churn out another compilation of songs that had been released before on other compilations (even Stone Cold Crazy, the only non-single on the disc, had been included on the 1992 Classic Queen compilation), except that Hollywood Records needed some more product to cram onto the shelves. True, it may have inspired fans of American Idol (which range somewhere between 4 million and 8 trillion, depending on the competing contestants) to rush out and buy a disc that featured some of Queen's hits, but why something with a little more thought put into it couldn't have been arranged just goes to show how slapdash Hollywood Records were treating Queen, and how indifferent the Queen machine had become toward the American fans.
Perversely, it worked, sending the album to #45 in the US, a depressing thought considering that the last album of all-new material ( Made In Heaven) barely scraped its way to #58. With a little more imagination, and the two Queen + Paul Rodgers tracks (which had already been released the previous year on Return Of The Champions) removed, Stone Cold Classics could have been something halfway decent, but as it stands, it's just another piece of product designed to shift a few units as opposed to Queen Productions actually trying to put something worthwhile out.
