The first and only single release from the Flash Gordon project was simply entitled Flash. This was a special mix of the album track Flash's Theme (featured on the opening credits of the film itself), featuring a wealth of samples from the film's dialogue. To date, the only album it is available on is Greatest Hits, so at the time of its release Queen's fans were buying something they could not actually get elsewhere. This, combined with the kitsch factor of Brian's unusual composition (which was later nominated for an Ivor Novello award), and the buzz around the film's release made the single a Top 10 hit in December of 1980.

The video was directed by Mike Hodges, who was also the director of Flash Gordon itself (and earlier cult British gangster classic Get Carter). Shot in November of 1980 at London's Anvil Studios, the video features the band performing the song to a screen showcasing clips from the film, in much the same way as the band recorded the soundtrack to the film onscreen.

There is also an alternate version of the video and single mix with alternate clips from the film. This was broadcast during the Concert For Kampuchea TV special in 1981 which Queen participated in, though this has never seen an official release. The standard version is currently available on Greatest Flix and Greatest Video Hits 1.
