Shortly after the Another World tour concluded in November 1998, Brian was approached by French film director Alexandre Aja, who had made the 1997 independent film, Over The Rainbow. When he was searching for someone to compose the music for the film, a friend suggested he ask Brian May. At first, Aja was surprised at such a prospect, but two months after he asked Brian, he received a response to meet up and discuss the film.

Aja had a rough edit ready to show Brian, and was delighted that he had been affected so deeply by the film. In a similar situation from Highlander, Brian was so enthused about the film that he offered to record the entire soundtrack instead of merely providing the main theme. This would be the first film that Brian would work on in its entirety by himself; there had been some confusion many years ago when a Brian May was credited with soundtrack music on many films like Mad Max and Dr. Giggles, but this was a different Brian May – an Australian composer who passed away in April 1997.

The film itself was adapted from Julio Cortazar's story "Graffiti", and is a dark, serious film, a considerable step away from the disposable, camp fun that was Flash Gordon and Highlander. Initially, the film was released in August 2000 only in European countries, with the soundtrack following suit; the following year, the film finally received a British release. The resulting album closely mirrors the darkness of the film, and is more of an atmospheric listen than an actual album. Anyone expecting Son Of Another World will be sorely disappointed, though the final song, 'Dream Of Thee', comes close to the introspection that Brian had perfected over the years, and is the only song on the album to feature any lyrics.

Liner notes

I lived the very beginning of Furia in Paris during January 1999 and the shock was amazing . The movie moved me very deeply so I thought that it would be too much pain for me to work for it. But I was really caught up with the movie and now Furia is a real part of my life. So I worked very closely with Alexandre, the creator of this movie, without the usual intermediary of the cinema world, to create the whole soundtrack for a movie for the first time in my career.
Words, music, soundtrack of this movie are a strange mixture of French and English which we are extremely proud. Furia is eternal and it is a part of our universe.
